Staying at home: Staying Active
2020-03-31
How can you stay fit and healthy when the gyms are closed and you can't play sports?
Around the world, we are all facing unexpected and unprecedented circumstances due to the ongoing global pandemic. Many of us are doing our bit to slow the spread of Covid-19. The advice is, increasingly, stay at home to stay safe.
Rather than dwell on the difficulties, we're using this blog post to help you and your family find positive new routines for staying healthy and happy at home. In the first of our Staying at Home series, we’ll be looking at exercise, staying active and keeping fit whilst at home.
Why is staying active important?
Everyone knows that keeping active is great for your physical and mental health. It’s how we stay healthy, build positive routines, and release all those helpful hormones into our bodies. And this is just as true in times of self-isolation and quarantine. But how can we stay fit and healthy when the gyms are closed and we can't play sports?
Here's our top suggestions:
1) Dance like nobody's watching!
Stick on your favourite tunes and dance around on your own, or with your family! It's a great cardio workout, and music is proven to lift your mood - especially if you sing along! If you all have different tastes in music, why not try a family-sized silent disco? Plug in your headphones and boogie to your own personal soundtrack!
2) Yes, YouTube Yoga!
The internet has brought us many wonderful things, from online recipes to cat videos, but have you ever tried online yoga? There are many out there to choose from, and range from beginner to advanced so there is something for everyone! Online yoga is an increasingly popular way to fit a daily dose of exercise and meditation into your routine. Check out this 30 day yoga journey with Adriene - namaste!

3) DIY ASAP!
We’ve seen a real spike in the number of DIY projects popping up in our newsfeeds as more of you make the most of your time at home. Which is great! DIY and gardening are fantastic ways to improve your health whilst being productive. You don't have to be digging, drilling and tilling from dusk ‘til dawn in order to get a good workout. Even a quick project here or there can be enough to flex those muscles! Better still, working to improve your personal space can have great effects on your overall well being.

4) Living room lunges!
It’s easier than ever to exercise from home thanks to the abundance of tutorials and exercise classes available online. Many personal trainers and gyms are providing a similar service but one who stands out for us is Joe Wicks, The Body Coach. Joe’s Stay At Home exercise routines were positioned to replace PE lessons for those children stuck at home, but they’re actually perfect for people of all ages. In fact, his first Live PE session on YouTube saw over 800,000 viewers tuning in! Could this be the future of exercising from home?
It’s important to support an active lifestyle with a healthy diet! One of our favourites ways to start a day is to add a hearty pour of Extra Virgin Olive Oil to breakfast smoothies and start the day with a healthy boost of antioxidants and good fats! So there you have it, a few of our top recommendations for staying active and healthy at home! Remember, positivity is the key! Got any other tips and tricks to share? Come let our online community know on Facebook and Instagram!
