TASTING NOTES & USAGE

Characterised by its mild flavour and aroma, La Española Olive Oil offers a smooth blend of pleasant bitterness, fruit, and spice. Use this oil for everyday cooking in your kitchen. It is ideal for medium heat cooking due to its smoke point. Also, perfect to use as a healthy substitute for butter.

What does smoke point mean?

The smoke point of an oil is the temperature at which it starts to visibly smoke and break down in the pan. When oil reaches this point, it not only produces smoke but also begins to lose its nutritional value and develop off-flavours due to the breakdown of fats. In some cases, harmful compounds can form if the oil is overheated repeatedly. Different oils have different smoke points depending on their type and how they’re processed. For example, refined oils typically have higher smoke points than unrefined or extra virgin oils. Knowing an oil’s smoke point helps you choose the right one for the cooking method—like using Extra Virgin Olive Oil for dressings or light sautéing, and refined olive oil for frying or roasting at higher temperatures.

Frying with Olive Oil

Olive oil is a great way to elevate fried dishes. Its mild and neutral flavour complements a whole host of ingredients and facilitates optimal cooking. Use it for wok-cooking, stir-fries, shallow and deep frying, and experience the superior flavour it brings to everyday dishes.

Does Olive Oil Go Bad?

La Española Olive Oil products all come with a recommended use-by-date. However, this is merely a guide. Olive oil doesn’t expire per se, and can be consumed after its use-by-date as long as it is stored in the appropriate conditions.

How to Store Olive Oil

Olive oil is made from the fruit of the olive tree, and like any natural food, it can spoil over time if not stored correctly.
To keep your olive oil tasting fresh and full of flavour, proper storage is key.

Follow these simple tips to make the most of your bottle.

  • Keep it cool and dry: Store olive oil in a kitchen cupboard away from direct sunlight and heat sources such as the hob or oven.
  • Mind the temperature: The ideal storage temperature is around 20ºC (room temperature).
  • Seal it tightly: Always replace the cap or lid straight after use. Exposure to air is a leading cause of spoilage, so keeping it sealed helps extend the shelf life and maintain its flavour.

What’s the difference between Olive Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

The key difference lies in how the oil is made and its quality. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the highest grade — it’s made from the first cold-pressing of fresh olives, without any heat or chemicals. This keeps its natural flavour, aroma, and antioxidants intact, giving it a fruity taste with a peppery finish. Olive Oil is a blend of refined olive oil and a small amount of extra virgin which is added for flavour. The refining process removes imperfections but also strips away much of the natural taste and nutrients. Olive Oil has a milder flavour and a higher smoke point, making it more suitable for cooking.
